How to Write an About Me Page

If you are a blogger, then your “About Me” page is one of the most important pages on your website. It tells people about your personality, gives them a sense of your voice and your style, and tells them how to get in touch with you. As a blogger, you’re selling yourself to your audience so your About page should really give readers an idea of who you are.

There are many different types of About pages out there, some effective and some less so. If you looking for advice on writing your About page or are considering writing yours from scratch, here are the most important things to consider before getting started.

Identify Your Target Audience

This may seem like an unnecessary step, but you should definitely invest time in considering who your audience is. You need to be able to identify who you’re writing for so you can connect with them and share your thoughts with them.

The best way to do this is to image who you want to be reading your blog. Get away from the computer. Take a walk and picture who you see reading your posts. Are they young? Old? Parents? Entrepreneurs? Potential employers?

There are so many communities on the Internet that it is not realistic to position towards every one. You need to decide who is your target audience and write for them.

Once you have done this step, it will be much easier to write your About page. You will know what tone of voice to use, how professional (or unprofessional) you can be, and how to style the page.

What Makes You Distinct?

If you are humble or shy, this may be a hard step for you, but a little bit of bragging will help your About page stand out. You need to explain what makes you different and unique. Why should I read your blog when there are so many options out there?

Tell your readers about what you are good at. Explain to them about the different experiences you have and what makes you special. Don’t exaggerate too much, but be sure to represent yourself as a strong, competent, and knowledgeable individual.

Also, don’t just talk about the industry or topic that your blog focuses on. Be sure to describe yourself as a well-rounded person. You can explain other interests and hobbies you may have or even a little bit about your personal life if you feel comfortable with it.

The key here is to shed some light on the person you are and what sets you apart from others in the blogosphere.

Putting It All Together

Now that you have thought about your audience and yourself in depth, it is time to pull all of this information together and write your “About Me” page. Here are some suggestions to create a successful page:

  • Use your unique voice! Write in a way that makes you feel comfortable.

  • Edit, edit, and re-edit. Re-read your About page and edit it until it is perfect. After all, this will be one of the most visited pages on your blog.

  • Add visuals. Insert pictures of yourself or people, places, and things that are important to you. This will add another dimension to your blog and put a face to the words on the page.

And that’s it! Don’t be intimidated by writing your “About Me” page but be sure to invest the time and effort into making it a quality part of your blog.
